Enthusiasm and Leadership

Those are two words that come to mind when we look back at the legacy left behind by Utah's own Terry McGinnis.

Terry, the executive director for the Tour of Utah, passed away last Saturday after a long and quiet battle with cancer. Never without a smile or supportive word, or energy, Terry, among his many accomplishments, brought the Tour of Utah from the ashes of postponement to what it is that we know today - one of the country's premiere cycling events.

Your energy, support, and inspiration will be missed, Terry. We're all winners for your contributions.

Notes from the Field

We found this gem in our Edge email-in box this morning...

Dear Edge,

I thought you might get a kick out of the picture on our home page www.bethelcycle.com

I have been beating the crap out of the wheels on the New England Cross scene and they have been awesome! Two weeks ago a guy lost control and crash landed hard on my rear rim which slammed me down. I got up and finished the race. The impact on the rear rim was so hard it bent a few spokes, but we were able to bring it right back in true.

The picture was from this week's race which was a mudfest. I never used deep - aero rims before in this situation and they were incredible, just floating through the mud!

I'm thoroughly impressed.

Monday's Gumbo

This week its mostly a muddy gumbo of cyclocross updates with just a dash of Xterra World Championship thrown in as more of a main dish than a bit of lagniappe that the 3:1 ratio would indicate.

Let's start off with Xterra for a few reasons...
A) the updates are from Hawaii
B) the updates are from Hawaii
C) the bike leg of Xterra is longer than an entire cyclocross race
D) its snowing in Utah, and Xterra updates are from Hawaii.

Nicolas Lebrun (2nd in green) and Conrad Stoltz (5th in white) on the podium in Maui.

Conrad and Nicolas both were aboard the 26" XC clincher wheelset, which Conrad used to exit the bike leg and T2 in the lead, but unfortunately we couldn't make any shoes that were as fast as our wheels. Nicolas swam, biked, and ran 2nd fastest on the day and finished less than a minute down on the eventual winner Eneko Llanos of Spain.

In an almost equally desirable location, the USGP of Cycloross Dirty Derby held rounds 3 & 4 in Louisville, KY.

Ryan Trebon took advantage of the equally rare and fabulously performing Edge cyclocross fork to demolish the field with a blistering turn of speed to catch and out sprint Jamie Driscoll for his first USGP win of the season. Will we see the same Trebon defend his jersey at 'cross nats, just down the street from his house?

Portland native, cassette tape mix artist and Kona teammate Barry Wicks also put the forks to good use in Kentucky.

Stepping it up another knotch at the GVA Trofee Koppenbergcross in Melden, Oudenaarde, Belgium, (whew) Jonathan Page attacked the infamous Koppenberg Cyclocross race in the tradition of European hard men...from deep within the trenches to finish again inside the top 20 of one of the ugliest and meanest fields Euro'cross can put together.

That's all I have for this Monday. Drop us a note or leave a comment, or simply our facebook page become a fan and update us on what you and your Edge products are up to.

Monday racing and 'cross compote

Its that time of year where if you're pinning on a race number, odds are that you're racing cyclocross and even more likely that if things aren't muddy yet...they're going to be soon.

Jonathan Page soldiered to a 13th place finish at the world cup in Pizen, Czech Republic. (video here)

We'd need to create a new language to find a superlative that hasn't been used to describe Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli, so we'll keep it simple: she won the European season finale TT Chrono des Nations in Les Herbiers, France on the 1.45 Edge medium depth tubular wheel on the front.

Kona's Ryan Trebon and Barry Wicks went one/two on both days of the Granogue and Wissahickon events in Pennsylvania aboard the every elusive Edge cyclocross forks.

Jamis' Tyler Wren made a special guest muddy appearance aboard the Edge bar/stem/fork/and 1.68 tubular wheel set up at the same events, and he looked to have gotten his money's worth out of the event. Mud, greasy mud, thick muddy mud, and wet mud greeted all of the riders at the PA weekend.

At the 2009 US Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships, Team Jamis rider Rotem Ishay won the XC and STXC titles for Durango's Fort Lewis College while teammate and CU Boulder student Blake Harlan took 8th and 5th, respectively, aboard Edge clinchers and the new Edge 9 degree flat sweep bar.

On the other side of the world, Fly V Australia's Jonathan Cantwell book ended his Jayco Herald Sun Tour with another win in the Lygon Steet Carlton final stage to lock down a 3rd overall in the stage race and the Sprints Points leader's jersey.

This upcoming weekend is the Xterra World Championships in Maui, Hawaii. Follow along as Edge athletes Nico Lebrun and Conrad Stoltz fight for the title of ultimate off road athlete.

Endless Summer...or is it Winter?

While many of us are putting away some of our summer toys and thinking about waxing ski edges, the racing continues around the globe.

The Fly V boys have been putting in long, hard days at the office at the Jayco Herald Sun Tour down under...which, I've been told, has neither been fun or full of sun.

Jonathan Cantwell again finished 2nd to Garmin's Chris Sutton on the stage, but this time losing the jersey at the line due to time bonuses.

"The race is tight and far from over..." said Cantwell. "I had the guys on the front in the closing K's, fighting the wind, in the gutter, and I can't say enough for the work they did. We'll be back fighting tomorrow."

North of the equator but still a world away from Edge headquarters, Jonathan Page is settling into his European campaign with a mid-week race Ardooie, deep into West Flanders, Beligum. From Flanders Page and the rest of the European cyclocross circus travel to Plzen, Czech Republic for the next World Cup round.

'Cross in Flanders.

You couldn't get any more Belgian without eating frites and mayo. While cage fighting.

On this side of the pond, North Star at Lake Tahoe is hosting collegiate mountain bike national championships this weekend. Team Jamis riders Rotem Ishay and Blake Harlan, of Fort Lewis and CU Boulder, respectively, will be pointing the Edge mtb clinchers at the podium in the XC, STXC, and omnium categories. Take it to the bank, and free rim strips to the first person to catch me if I'm wrong, but an Edge mtb wheel will win the XC.

Back in Ogden, the snow hasn't started falling yet, but we're prepping, cleaning, and organizing for next year, and eyeballing the sun belt for our Fall and Winter demo tour!

Wheels in the field

Beligum, Australia, Kona, and Ogden - wheel updates from the field.

Jon Cantwell won the opening crit at the Jayco Herald Sun Tour in Victoria, Australia, on Edge 1.68 tubulars. Cantwell has won the opening stage of the last 4 Australian stage races he's started.

Jon Page returned to his Belgian home base last Friday and stepped form the plane to the start line at the GvA Trophy in Namur, Wallonia. If you've ever wondered what those guys (and their equipment) go through on the European 'Cross scene, check out these videos.

Insanity.

Congrats to Lori Osen, of El Dorado, California, for posting the fastest bike leg of her age group at Ironman Hawaii last weekend. Lori rode a 5:22 for the 112 mile bike leg, averaging almost 21mph en route to her 2nd place finish on a combo of the 1.45 on the front and 1.68 deep dish rear.

Of course you don't have to travel the globe to test your fitness and the Edge products...that can be done just up the street from Edge headquarters at the Weber County Fairgrounds!

Don't forget to stock up on wheel bags for the winter to keep your wheels warm and cozy, and stay tuned for a Q&A with fork designer Kevin Nelson as he details the new tapered steerer forks, and the new Christmas colorway decals.
