ARMSTRONG ADMIRING SAGER'S EDGE XC CLINCHERS

Weekend Updates

While most folks are gearing up for both the start of the holiday season and their base training, many of the Edge athletes are still going strong in their respective athletic arenas.

The two person team of Mike Broderick and Mary McConneloug of Kenda/NoTube have been racing strong on the East Coast on their Edge Composites cockpit and special edition builder's badge 'cross fork.

Down south a couple of thousand miles, Edge mtb wheels were being "product tested" at the Juan Pelota Ranch, home of Lance Armstrong. Hosting the inaugural Mellow Johnny Classic this past Sunday, Armstrong himself made one of his rare appearances on a mountain bike against one of the most talented fields outside a national championship level event including National Champions Heather Irmiger and Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski (Subaru/Gary Fisher), Dave Wiens (Topeak-Ergon), Ironman hotshot Chris Lieto, and Edge Composites'/Team Jamis Jason Sager.

To no one's surprise Irmiger and JHK took top honors in their respective races. Armstrong flatted in a treacherous creek crossing that claimed many riders including Sager, who rallied to come back through the field to finish 3rd.

Team Kona had a rough go in the Hamptons against the three headed Hydra from Cyclocrossworld.com boys. Trebon finished just off the podium on both days, perhaps aiming more towards 'cross nats next month in his home town of Bend, Oregon.

Across the pond, Jonathan Page checks in from his European campaign. The pics are worth a gander and to give you a glimpse into the lifestyle we all would love to live, if at least for a day!

Shorts in November

Well, it was warm, except when it wasn't....which was at the night time Dirt Derby STXC wheel demo we did with ATX's Bicycle Sport Shop.

Thursday it was further south in a search for warmth...

Bicycle Heaven hosted one of the more fun road demos we've had in awhile, serving up a few hours of NW San Antonio's best back roads. Low road traffic and far too much tail wind to be legal, I couldn't have asked for a better day to put guys on the 65 clinchers. BH owner Matt Hamlin was aboard one of my favorite looking bikes I've seen done in Bicycle Heaven colorway. The smaller steel tubes look striking in contrast to the bold lines of the deep dish wheels.

Chris Distefano stopped by to visit in Austin and brought his new Chris King Cielo CX bike. Its not too often I see the rims built up on silver spokes, but on the polished King road hub, you'd be hard pressed to find a classier look. PICT0021

Updates from Munich and Austin

What do Germany and Texas have in common? I'm not too sure, but malted beverages and Edge products do come to mind.

In Austin last weekend, we visited some of our newest Edge dealers, brought out the fleet of wheels, and we had our share of TexMex, chips, salsa. On Sunday we snuck in a race at the famed Rocky Hill Ranch where Team Jamis racers Adam Snyder and Jason Sager continued with "product testing".

Texas

Evidently we made some reasonably fast wheels as Sager took on a win and Snyder, below, survived.

On the other side of the world, track star and Edge track fork user Colby Pearce, who's resume is too long to recap other than LOTS of World Championships and a few Olympics, checks in from Munich:

I started the Munich 6 day last night with my partner, Holloway, but it was over almost before it began as I crashed out of the race. I went to the hospital and eventually was diagnosed with a broken collarbone.

Normally, I am not superstitious, but I have to comment on this: we were team number 13 and the second day of the event would be friday the 13th (today). I did not even make it that far into the event.

In 6 day racing the numbers are printed on the jerseys (or tricots, as they are called, which is shorthand for incredibly poor fitting, cheaply made jersey with no pockets and a 99% lycra content). This prevented us from honoring the tradition of pinning one #13 on upside down. The number gods were not smiling upon us.

The short story goes like this: Holloway and I missed a change, and Sebastian Siedler crashed into Holloway, taking them both out. I rode a lap thinking "Dang, Holloway crashed!!!" and when I came around the home straight, Siedler's bike was still smack in the middle of the track. Things happen fast on a 200 meter velodrome...

I made it around the bike but has such a severe correction that I took myself out in the process. Tail-over-tea kettle and that was all she wrote...apparently there is a bit of a history with riders breaking collarbones in the first chase in Munich and I have become the latest addition to the list.

Robert Bartko was taken down in the crash also, and we went to the hospital together. We spent the evening trying to not make each other laugh at stupid jokes, because laughing was spasmodically painful for both of us. Holloway grew another appendage on his elbow, in the form of a giant bruise. Fortunately, he will live to fight another day, and is now paired up with the Belgian Kenny DeKettle, whose partner Tim Mertens had to withdraw after experiencing dizziness during the racing.

So now I am coming home for more Dr visits, some rest, and to try and get recovered for the next contract in Zurich, which is in December.

Holloway and I came over for the Manchester World Cup about 12 days ago, so I had some time in Germany inbetween event to fill with European experiences.

Trip highlights include a fantastic traditional goose dinner in Dusseldorf with Sven and Suzan Teutenberg. This was like Thanksgiving dinner in the States, and it is a fall tradition in Germany.

It was so yummy, I am compelled to include a photo.

colbyfood

All in all, certainly not the best trip I have had to Europe, but thats the way it goes. See you at the races....

Ciao

Performance Roadwear

I don't know about you, but there a few things that I've done enough times to know that A) its not as fun as it looks...and B) its far from glamourous.

One of those things is riding in the rain. I lived in Portland for a few years so I know a thing or two about being cold and wet while on the bike...and even I never was foolish enough to do it bare handed.

Picture 1

Yet, leave it to Rapha, to have me day dreaming about doing exactly that...climbing an endless mountain col, in Norway, in the rain...which most certainly is a cold Norwegian rain.

Gloveless.

Good job guys. We're proud to have you on our gear out there.

Going To Texas

For those familiar with the Central Texas mountain bike race held at Rocky Hill Ranch, now is your chance to test out the Edge mountain bike wheels on one of Texas' most storied courses.

We'll see you out there from 11-4pm on Saturday, November 7.

Seeing The Forrest Through The Trees

That's an odd piece of advice, one might think, but sometimes you have to look at the big picture by ignoring what's in front of you.

Take cyclocross racing - there are a lot of these events. Each of them seems to be important and for those that we deem the most important, these are often prepared for by going to the preceding 'cross races....so to miss a race often feels like you're undermining your later performances.

But, life happens. Crashes. Injuries. Sickness. Such is the case of two Edge champion athletes - Kona's Ryan Trebon crashed last weekend and he made the difficult decision to stay home and heal...and thus missing the two Boulder Cups this past weekend in Boulder, Colorado.

Eyes on the prize, eyes on the prize...heal up, and come back stronger.

In his stead, Team Jamis rider Adam Snyder spent the better part of the weekend's double header hoping barriers rather than running them.

Snyder

On the other side of the world, Edge athlete Jonathan Page make the tough call to skip the Superprestige Hoogstraten in Belgium while nursing a respiratory infection. With the up coming World Cup in Nommay, France this weekend, like Trebon, its better to access your cards, and hedge your bets on resting, healing, and looking at the big picture by managing the details.

In between 60 degree sunny days, Utah has given us some powder days. With the eyes on the prize, you've still got to get out and clip in....regardless.

Xterra World's silver medalist Nico Lebrun stopped by the Edge offices to talk shop, Hawaiian experiences, and 2010. Pretty impressive to have that caliber of athlete simply excited to talk about hoops!

Custom and customer's submissions have started arriving here at Edge. Be it a custom bike build, such as this one by Cycle Path in Portland....

It was difficult to really understand much of what was coming from his overly excited phone call, but I did catch something about a perma-grin-face-cramp when he was talking about the wheels and riser bar, but that might have been the single track talking.
